10 Minute Solution: Carb and Calorie Burner(Anchor Bay) 2005 What is it? Five 10-minute mix-and-match workouts meant to burn carbs and calories (pretty much the same thing, since each carb is made up of four calories). Three of the routines are cardio, one is bootcamp-style, and the final segment includes light toning. Michelle Dozois instructs. Who is it for? Advanced beginning through intermediate exercisers. These routines are fast-paced and often challenging. You will need a mat for the last two segments, and a pair of light (2 to 5 pound) dumbbells for the final segment.
What to expect: Admittedly, it is hard to get a decent workout in just 10 minutes — one that will really make you sweat, that gives you a feeling of accomplishment. It seems like many 10-minute workouts are meant to be combined together for a longer workout, or if they're made to stand alone, they exist there so that the exerciser can squeeze it in and avoid that guilty feeling she would have had if she had skipped her workout altogether. Carb and Calorie Burner is something else — it really does give you 10 powerful workout minutes (well, in reality count it as 2 warm-up minutes and 8 of real exercise). These are quality routines meant to burn the maximum amount of calories and carbs possible, whether you do just one routine, or several of them. The first segment is called "Slow and Steady Burn," which isn't wholly accurate. Steady it is, but it isn't particularly slow. Expect to move a lot, and sweat. "Carb Killer" is a kick boxing workout that's easy to follow, but very aerobic. "Power Blast" is a tough routine that includes plyometric (explosive jumping) moves. "Interval Burn," the boot camp style workout, is just as challenging, and it has you alternating quick cardio intervals with push-ups, burpees and other hardcore exercises. The final segment, "Metabolism Booster," uses light weights for a full body toning routine that doesn't waste a second. The last routine is the only one you might want to run through twice if you have the time — combine it with a couple of the other carb burning workouts on days when you have time for a full workout. But any of these routines are great for those times when you really do only have 10 minutes, and still want to feel like you worked out. Instructor Michelle Dozois is a veteran fitness pro whose cueing and enthusiasm are near perfect. So if you think a 10-minute probably isn't worth much, spending some time with these five workouts will change your mind. Other Exercise DVDs you may like:
