10 Minute Solution: Fat Blasting Latin Dance Mix(Anchor Bay)
2008
What is it?
Five 10-minute Latin-style cardio dance routines that can be mixed, matched — or you can just do ‘em all. Stella Sandoval instructs.
Who is it for?
Advanced beginning through intermediate exercisers. It helps a lot to be familiar with Latin dance moves since each 10-minute routine contains new choreography and all are taught very, very quickly. (With only 10 minutes per segment, did you really expect Sandoval to take her time?)
What to expect:
Latin style is a very compact form of dance. The moves are small to moderate and very low impact. So it’s not always easy to get a good workout from a Latin dance routine, especially if you have some cardio experience under your belt. Stella Sandoval should be commended for whipping up five 10-minute routines that keep you moving — and burning calories — nonstop. She adds the oomph to Latin dance by constantly creating new choreography that’s not too difficult but that keeps you on your toes (figuratively and a couple of times, literally). Even if you do cardio dance exercise regularly, you probably won’t learn all the moves in these five workouts your first time out. I didn’t — it took me about three passes. But I never got so frustrated that I was ready to just quit (read: Prevention’s Drop It With Dance — I did master this workout eventually, but there were times it raised my blood pressure more than my heart rate). Sandoval pretty much covers all the Latin dance moves — cha-cha-cha, merengue, salsa, mambo and the like. She adds a lot of twisting and keeps your arms moving too — all the better to keep your arms and abs working along with your legs. Latin moves are very simple, really, and once you start adding a little hip work and style, they’re also a lot of fun. Sandoval is encouraging and seems to be enjoying herself as much as you will, once you’ve learned the steps. And she has you covering a lot of ground and jumping once or twice, which that helps with the fat burning. Since I have all the time in the world, I always did this DVD all the way through and found myself starting to really catch my breath around the end of the third routine; by the end I felt like I had a pretty good workout. You, of course, can program these routines however you want, but you’ll probably get the most benefit out of going for the whole shebang.
