Afro-Caribbean Step(Tapeworm Video) 1999 What is it? 51 minutes of African dance-flavored step work with an 8-minute abdominal workout at the end. Who is it for? Those who are a little jaded when it comes to the same old step routines and who want something different and fun. May be a bit frustrating for the dance-challenged.
What to expect: Those who love experimenting with different dance styles will find this hour-long video a pleasant change from the same-old step workout. Instructor Debra Bono blends traditional step aerobics with African dance moves to create playful, heart-pumping choreography. Bono even gives some upper body moves that will stretch out the chest and shoulders — this is a real, full-range-of-motion workout! Not only is it creative, it's also well-made. Bono's cueing is excellent and she shows variations from beginners to advanced. The syncopated, drum-based music is also a pleasant change from routine electronic or rock-based aerobic soundtracks. There's a good, eight-minute warm-up and a decent, five-minute cool down. After the step routines (there are actually two back-to-back), there's a short but intense abdominal workout. At eight minutes it doesn't sound very long, but if you follow Bono's instructions to the letter, you will definitely feel a burn. Overall, this is not an easy tape to master, but very gratifying once you get the moves down. It's a fun, earthy, life-affirming workout and highly recommended.
