What is it?
A 56-minute, light cardio workout featuring Latin-style steps. There are two 20-minute cardio sections (the rest of the workout is warm-up and cool down), so by skipping one, you can shorten it to a 36-minute workout. Desi Bartlett instructs.
Who is it for?
The intensity is good for beginning and advanced beginning exercisers, but you should already be familiar with some Latin dance, since you aren't given detailed instruction for the steps. That said, the moves are pretty easy, so most people should catch on without too much trouble.
What to expect:
Here's a simple, not-too-intense cardio workout that will please those who want some exercise, but who don't want it to feel like work. Shot in a lush, tropical Hawaiian setting, this routine takes basic Latin steps and gets your blood flowing. Fortunately the steps are easy to learn, since Bartlett's voice-over cueing isn't the best; she's often behind the count so you might find yourself doing catch up if you aren't constantly keeping your eye on the screen. Once you've warmed up, the workout is divided into two sections: the Merengue segment is a little more fast paced and concentrated, while the Salsa routine is a littler slower, uses larger movements and has you covering more ground. None of this is intense cardio — if it's a hot day, you may work up a sweat. It's a good level for those who are getting back into shape, or who had to take an extended break from working out. There's certainly nothing wrong with that — this DVD is fun and not everyone wants to sweat buckets every time they work out. That said, intermediate exercisers will probably want something more challenging. A couple of really nice things about this DVD — you can do one or both 20-minute segments, depending on your schedule and energy level, and there are three different language options: English, Spanish and Spanglish (the latter mainly alternates English and Spanish sentences and phrases, as opposed to being a real Spanish-English homogenization). So if you want to dance lightly into an exercise regimen, give this DVD a spin.
