What is it?
A combination of cardio dance, sculpting and strength training segments that can be done as three separate 30-minute workouts, or as one complete 50-minute workout. Lisa Nunziella instructs.
Who is it for?
Advanced beginning through intermediate exercisers will enjoy the sculpting and strength training segments. To nail the cardio dance segment, you should be an intermediate exerciser with a flair for dance — there is a lot of choreography for such a brief workout! There is an instructional segment so you can learn the steps at a slower pace, but even then you will have to practice. The only equipment you'll need is a good pair of athletic shoes and a mat.
What to expect:
For about five minutes when I was 20, I wanted to be an actress and part of my training involved sporadically attending jazz and modern dance classes. I would always set up camp near the back of the room so the instructors couldn't see me tripping over my feet and making a fool of myself as I learned the steps — and I usually only learned them after going home and practicing for another few days. This DVD made me feel like I was back in class, only I didn't have to worry about the instructor sneering at my klutziness because she couldn't see me, and it did take me several days to get these steps down. The actual cardio segment is a mere 10 minutes long and consists of just one 64-count routine... during which you never repeat the same step quite the same way twice. The steps are jazzy and stylish and fun, once you get them down, but unless you are a pro (or were a pro at some time in the not-terribly distant past), you will need to practice the step breakdown a lot. In spite of my poor showing in my dance classes, I am above-average in ability, and I probably broke down the steps somewhere between 15 and 20 times over the course of three or four days. Is it worth it for just 10 minutes' worth of workout? Depends on how you feel about dancing. I love learning steps, as long as the instructor is good and not obnoxious, and I like Lisa Nunziella quite a bit. And of course, I didn't just mess around with the dance steps. I also did the sculpting and strength routines. Each of the combos listed on the menu include the 10-minute warm-up and 10-minute cool down. You can do just the dance, sculpting or strength (30 minutes apiece); or you can do the sculpting and strength together for a 40-minute workout, or you can do all three segments for a full, 50-minute exercise session. The sculpting segment has a lot of Pilates-based moves, and the strength section uses your body weight to tone - you do plies, pushups and such — the type of toning segments you might find at the end of a dance class. The warm-up and cool down are very dancey, but not complicated, and involve a lot of active stretching, which is great for flexibility and functional fitness. If you ever were a dancer, or like me, have pretended you were — and you don't mind practicing for a while — you will enjoy this workout quite a bit.
