What is it?
A 40-minute cardio dance workout that includes 10-minute segments each of Latin, "swing" and "80s" steps. Cal Pozo leads the 7-minute warm-up; Tracey Mallett instructs for the rest of the workout.
Who is it for?
Advanced beginning exercisers who love to dance. If you are an intermediate cardio/ dance enthusiast, you may like this for light days.
What to expect:
I was having "one of those days" — I woke up late, the modem wouldn't hook up to the internet, which necessitated a call to my ISP provider, and I was just in a bad mood in general. On days like that, it's hard to get motivated to work out. Especially when you have a cardio dance DVD on the top of the pile. There's nothing more frustrating than feeling grouchy, and then dealing with a lot of choreography that convinces you that you've got two left feet on top of it all. But I forged ahead anyway with this DVD, figuring that if I really hated it, I could just go for a walk to clear my head. Well, the great outdoors never called my name — I wound up having so much fun that it instantly put a brighter spin on my day. Granted, this workout may not do that for everybody — it's definitely not for the dance challenged. But if you can master most cardio dance routines without too much difficulty, this one has a lot to offer. And if you're already a cardio dance enthusiast, you'll probably want to skip the warm-up. Cal Pozo just goes through some basic Latin steps that you already know. So jump around a little, run in place, or bound up and down your staircase for a few minutes and you'll be ready for the next half hour. There are three different dance styles and they're all enjoyable and not too hard to learn (I got them all in one pass through, although I had to futz through on a couple of steps). The first segment combines Latin moves with cardio steps; the second is called "swing" but is really a combination of several dance styles from different vintage eras; and the "80s" routine has a lot of 70s disco moves ( Saturday Night Fever did come out in 1977, after all). But really, who cares about semantics when you just want to move? And move you will throughout this workout. You may not sweat buckets, but you will definitely feel like you burned calories. If you love to dance but haven't been working out for all that long, this could fit very nicely into your regular cardio roster. If you're a more experienced exerciser, it's more for light days.
