(Lionsgate)
2007
What is it?
An hour-long cardio dance workout... or, rather, a 50-minute cardio dance routine, if you skip the useless 10-minute "freestyle" segment. Ashly Costa, Kym Johnson and Maksim Chmerkovsky — all professional dancers from the Dancing With the Stars show — instruct.
Who is it for?
Beginning and advanced beginning exercisers who have a flair for dance. If you're dance challenged you probably shouldn't even be reading this.
What to expect:
If you're addicted to Dancing With the Stars and find yourself imitating last night's steps in your kitchen while your coffee's brewing the next morning, then this workout is probably for you. If you've spent your life avoiding the dance floor, then this DVD isn't the place to start. It's as simple as that. This is not the kind of dance routine that starts you off slowly and makes sure you get the steps down before continuing. The moves come at you quickly, and it will probably take you a few tries to get them down unless you had a lot of dance experience sometime in your distant past. (If you've danced much in your recent past, this may not get your heart rate up enough.) After the warm-up, the workout is divided into five 10-minute segments: the matador-lik Paso Doble, taught by Chmerkovsky, the Cha-Cha, taught by the chirpy Costa, the sexy Samba, which Johnson teaches, and a high-energy Jive routine taught by all three instructors. There's also a 10-minute freestyle segment, but you might as well skip to the cool down — there's no structure and even experienced dancers won't know what to do, since the trio is clearly just goofing around. Except for the Jive routine, this is a light workout — fun, but you won't sweat buckets. You will, however, learn some steps you can take to the dance floor.
