(Lionsgate)
2008
What is it?
A 45-minute Latin cardio dance DVD, plus a 15 minute "dancer's toning workout." Cheryl Burke and Maksim Chmerkovsky from the Dancing With the Stars show instruct.
Who is it for?
Beginning and advanced beginning exercisers who love dancing and want to learn some Latin moves, or practice if they already know them. This isn't for the dance challenged, but it's not for experienced exercisers, either.
What to expect:
If you've been wanting to learn some cool Latin steps, this Dancing With the Stars workout pretty much covers the gamut: after a quick warm-up, you get 10 minutes each of basic Merengue, Cha-Cha, Samba and Mambo moves. The instruction is divided between Cheryl Burke and Maksim Chmerkovsky from the TV show. While they're pro dancers, they aren't really pro dance instructors (there's a huge difference), so the cueing may be off at times (Burke especially can be confusing). But fortunately, most Latin steps are pretty easy and unless you're dance challenged, you will probably pick them up after a few passes. If you're already familiar with Latin dance, then you won't find anything new with this DVD — there's not really much in the way of choreography. You just learn the steps and then you're off to the next style. The workout finishes with a 15-minute "dancer's toning workout" — basically, some light sculpting exercises, which you can also do separate from the cardio segments. This DVD is fine if you're a beginner; if you've been working out for a while, chances are it won't make you break a sweat.
