Deante Dance(Urban Rebounding Group)
2007
What is it?
Five separate workouts, four jazz and modern dance-style cardio and toning, and a 25-minute core routine. Karen Gayle instructs.
Who is it for?
Beginning and advanced beginning exercisers for the dance routines, advanced beginning and intermediate exercisers for the core segment. All workouts are done barefoot, so you won’t need shoes — just a mat for the core workout.
What to expect:
Finally – here’s one cardio dance DVD that doesn’t require any prior dance knowledge! Even though the moves are variations on Martha Graham and (especially) Lester Horton, they are easy enough for nearly anyone to learn. And if you have a hard time with any of the steps, each routine has its own segment where Gayle and one of her dancers breaks them down for you. The dance segments range from half an hour to 40 minutes, and basically use the same 10 steps. For some (especially those fluent in dance moves), this may get a little repetitive. Those new to dance or to exercise probably won’t mind visiting these moves over and over again for a good, long while because they are fun and many of them are great lower body toners. The routines all flow very nicely with the help of live percussion and jazz piano accompaniment, and once you have the steps down (it won’t take long), you’ll feel graceful, even if you don’t normally do dance workouts. The core routine is actually pretty tough — Gayle uses some Pilates and a lot of unusual (but challenging) variations of traditional moves such as crunches. Unless you have abs of steel, you probably won’t make it all the way through the 25-minute workout without at least one pause — and that’s a good thing! Even when you outgrow the dance workouts, you’ll be doing the core routine for a long time to come.
