(Lionsgate)
2008
What is it?
A half-hour cardio routine, a 10-minute standing Pilates toning segment and 10-minute Pilates mat segment; together they equal a 50-minute workout. Denise Austin instructs.
Who is it for?
Beginning through intermediate exercisers. Beginners will likely find it a challenge while intermediates can use it for a lighter day. You will need light (2 to 5 pound) dumbbells for the standing Pilates routine and a mat for the Pilates mat segment.
What to expect:
I love Lisa Wheeler. You may wonder why I'm starting off a review of a Denise Austin DVD this way, unless you've peeked at the credits of any of her DVDs in the past few years. Wheeler has been Austin's choreographer for quite a while now, and she's helped bring up the quality of her workouts. The cardio routine created by Wheeler for this DVD is fun, dancey and easy enough to learn so that you don't get too lost if Austin cues a bit late (she often does in her enthusiasm). The moves are basic mambos, step-touches, kicks and the like, but Austin often adds a sexy shimmy into the mix for flavor and fun. The two 10-minute Pilates routines are good light toners. The first contains a lot of classic Pilates standing moves with weights, and the second contains familiar mat work moves, such as the Hundred, single and double leg stretch and side kicks. Austin's enthusiasm may be cloying to some, but it's infectious, especially when you realize that she's probably older than the other exercisers in the workout and she's doing the moves with more energy than any of them.
