Leslie Sansone: Walk at Home — Walk Your Belly Flat(Anchor Bay)
2009
What is it?
A 42-minute, 3 “mile” walking workout, plus a few minutes of abdominal exercise instruction, from Leslie Sansone.
Who is it for?
Beginning to advanced beginning exercisers. This is a moderate workout for Sansone, but unless you’re really out of shape, even exercise newbies should be able to handle at least a mile or two, if not the whole routine. A mat is recommended for the abdominal exercise and stretching segment.
What to expect:
For over 25 years, Leslie Sansone has made a career out of walking. In fact, she’s parlayed it into a multi-million dollar empire and just launched a Walk Leader Certification program (http://www.walkleader.com). So after dozens and dozens of walking workout videos and DVDs, does she have anything new to offer? The answer is twofold: 1) not really and 2) who cares? Because if you’re a fledgling exerciser, an out-of-shape Baby Boomer or someone with two left feet who can’t even imagine cardio dancing, much less try it, then Sansone is your lifeline to fitness. With just a few basic marches, kicks and side steps, you can raise your heart rate in the privacy of your living room without tripping over yourself. In this particular DVD, Sansone is alone (which seems to be a trend lately — it’s been a while since she’s done a DVD featuring a group class). She leads you through three “miles” (walking segments of about 13-14 minutes) — you can do the whole routine, or just one of the three miles, your choice. All three together give you a solid, 40-plus minute workout. The feature of this particular DVD is the 8-minute add-on, which includes some abdominal exercise and a stretch. The segment is really only for beginners — Sansone gives you detailed instruction for bicycle crunches and puts you through a few short sets. It’s only useful if you’ve never done bicycle crunches before, and once you have them down, you’ll want to do more of them than you do with the DVD. The stretch is great, if a little short — it would do everyone good if they spent a few extra minutes stretching at the end of any cardio workout, to keep muscles supple and lessen any potential next-day soreness (although with Sansone’s workouts, you’re not as likely to be sore). If you’re new to Sansone and new to exercise, this DVD, with its one-mile and full-workout options, is as good a place as any to start.
