(Rodale)
2006
What is it?
Three quick (under half an hour) walking workouts from Prevention magazine and fitness instructor Chris Freytag. Also included is an audio CD containing five 10 to 15-minute walking workouts that you can take outdoors.
Who is it for?
Beginning to advanced beginning exercisers. These routines are great to use if you're just getting a fitness program off the ground. For one workout you will need 3 to 5 pound dumbbells.
What to expect:
Walking workouts have grown in popularity because they are easy enough for beginners and you can track your progress by "mile." Chris Freytag's 3 cardio workouts toss a few more dancey steps into the mix, but for the most part, she keeps the moves simple so that just about anyone will be able to catch on. The first workout on the DVD is a 24-minute/ 1-mile Accelerated Workout — Freytag alternates 3 minutes of moderate intensity moves with 1-minute, higher-intensity blasts. The second, 23-mintute workout is called "Body Shaping," and uses dumbbells for quick bursts of toning. Many of the exercises are designed to hit multiple muscle groups, to make optimum use of your time. Because the dumbbell moves are done quickly, most exercisers will find this the most challenging workout. The DVD's final workout is all about Cardio and at 28-minutes (and one and a half "miles"), runs a bit longer than the other two routines. You'll recognize many of the moves from the other routines, so if you've already done them, you'll have no trouble mastering this workout. Each of the 3 segments have the same warm-up and cool down. (It would have been nice to have the DVD be programmable, so that you could combine two or three of the workouts, with the warm-up and cool down performed just once.) In addition to the DVD, you also get an audio CD, containing workouts that you can use when you take your walk out of doors. You actually get a lot of exercise with this set, so for beginners, it's a very worthwhile purchase.
