Punch and Firm: Cardio Kickboxing with Lynn Hahn(Bayview) 2008 What is it? An hour-long cardio kickboxing workout that can be done in full, or as two separate 40-minute routines. Lynn Hahn instructs. Who is it for? Advanced beginning to intermediate exercisers. It may be just a tad too intense for complete beginners, although she does offer a decent tutorial. You will need a mat for the ending cool-down, which includes some ab work.
What to expect: How you feel about this workout may depend on how dazzled you are by "star" fitness instructors and high production values. This workout doesn't have 'em. What it does have is a pretty good cardio kickboxing routine that's nothing fancy but satisfyingly sweat-inducing (up to an intermediate level — any higher and you'll be left wanting). Hahn is a longtime pro who has over 35 years experience and is a martial arts specialist. She doesn't come off like a hard, tough cookie, however — instead, imagine the PTA lady down the street leading your workout (if the PTA lady down the street happens to be a 3rd degree karate black belt). In other words, Hahn's neither flashy nor glamorous, but her down-to-earth persona should make many exercisers feel comfortable and not intimidated. Her instruction is clear, even if the camera angles sometimes aren't. Usually, the camera work is passable, if ordinary, but occasionally they'll go in for a close-up that doesn't include the body parts you are working. The set isn't fancy, either — in fact, I would guess that it was shot at Hahn's martial arts school with minimal equipment. But the important part is the workout, and you get it here with punches, kicks and shuffles that keep you in constant motion. If you choose to do the whole 58-minute routine, you'll definitely be winded, and even the 40-minute workouts are a good way to jumpstart your day. This plain-wrap workout contains a nifty punch.
