Lisa Rinna: Dance Body Beautiful — Jive, Jump, Ballroom Bump(Warner Home Video) 2008 What is it? A 55-minute cardio dance DVD using moves from jive, Latin and disco. Actor Lisa Rinna instructs; the choreography was put together by pro dancer Louis van Amstel. Who is it for? Beginning to advanced exercisers who want to learn some basic dance steps. The workout stops and starts frequently, so it's not particularly intense.
What to expect: There's no doubt that Lisa Rinna can dance; whether she can instruct is something else. She's good for breaking down steps, but add music and pick up the pace, and it's clear that she's never been taught how to cue. The routines are divided into segments that are approximately 12 minutes each, and that focus on basic steps for one particular dance form — jive, cha-cha, salsa and disco. First Rinna shows you the moves. Since the steps are basic and easy to learn, these go pretty quick. Next, there's a slow version of the dance, then a segment with the paced picked up. Finally, each segment finishes with a minute and a half fast version. Ending it all is a short cool down and stretch. Because the steps are so simple and Rinna is so likable, it's easy to forgive the fact that her cues often happen a beat after you're onto the new move, and that she doesn't instruct mirror style (where the instructor cues "right," and it's actually your right and her left). The camerawork isn't terribly helpful either, so even if you have done other dance cardio DVDs, it's a good idea to learn the moves in the breakdown. In spite of a slick production, there are a few other flaws: the music sometimes doesn't have a good beat to help lead you, and a couple of times it doesn't seem to fit well with the dance style. And there's too much pausing between segments — it'd be better to flow right into the next one to keep your body moving and heart rate up. While this is a fun workout (and don't let the jive segment discourage you - the rest of the DVD is easier), it seems like it was put together by people who know how to make a video look good but don't really know how to format a proper exercise DVD.
