(Anchor Bay/Starz)
2007
What is it?
An advanced series of walking workouts from Leslie Sansone. The mix-and-match segments run from 10 to 15 mintutes; all together they run about an hour and 10 minutes.
Who is it for?
Advanced beginner to low intermediate exercisers — these routines are energetic, but not all that tough. Three of the segments require inexpensive props: 1 to 3 pound weights, an exercise band, and a "walk belt" (I just wrapped an exercise band around my waist and it worked fine).
What to expect:
Granted, if you are an intermediate exerciser, you can get just as good a workout in a shorter period of time by exercising more intensely, but Sansone's 5-mile routine is fun, easy to do (as in no complicated moves) and cheery. You're doing low impact moves for over an hour, and even though there's only one segment with a couple short bursts of jogging, you do get a little endorphin rush. For its length, this is not Sansone's most challenging DVD — a couple of her 4-mile workouts are harder. For this DVD, she uses light toning equipment in three out of the five "miles," beginning with small handweights. Segment three uses the "walk belt" (although, as I mentioned, an exercise band works too), and the final segment uses an exercise band (which Sansone refers to as a "stretchy band"). Segments two and four are straight cardio, with the first cardio segment being the faster one. There's also a brief stretch at the end; you may want to add some more stretching afterwards, especially if you do all five miles. Even the upper end of Sansone's baby boomer audience should be able to master this DVD. Younger and/ or fitter exercisers can add intensity by adding more arm movements, making the steps bigger and following Sansone's instruction to "sit into" side steps and kick backs. This DVD is programmable — you can do all five segments or you can do a choice of three (the two cardio and one toning segment) for a workout that runs between 40 and 45 minutes. This DVD gives you variety and a bit of toning to go with your cardio, but if you can do it easily then you should supplement it with some shorter, more intense workouts, plus some additional strength training. Light weights and exercise bands are nice supplemental toners, but you need a little more to really build muscle and strength.
