Autobiography of a Yogi:A Video Pilgrimage Through the Life of Paramahansa Yogananda (Crystal Clarity Publishers) 1998 What is it? A 27-minute slide show documentary showing the places that Paramahansa Yogananda wrote about in Autobiography of a Yogi. Who is it for? Anyone who was inspired by Autobiography of a Yogi or the life and teachings of Paramhansa Yogananda.
What to expect: With his Self-Realization Fellowship, Paramahansa Yogananda was responsible for bringing Yoga to the West on a wide scale in the early part of the twentieth century. Although he emphasized the spiritual over the physical aspects, the practice of Hatha Yoga would undoubtedly not be so widespread in the U.S. today if he had not embarked on his mission. His 1946 book, Autobiography of a Yogi is a classic, and recommended reading for anyone who is even remotely interested in the deeper aspects of Yoga (even if those who decide that the spiritual side is not for them will still find it fascinating reading!). This slide show traces Yogananda's life in India. The places where many of the important events of the book took place are beautifully represented here. The narrator is Yogananda's disciple, and founder of Ananda Yoga, Swami Kriyananda (J. Donald Walters). He relates stories of Yogananda's young life, his first encounter with his guru Sri Yukteswar, his founding of the school for boys, his meeting with the mysterious Babaji and many other events. This video is best appreciated by those who have already read Autobiography of a Yogi; those who haven't may not understand the significance of the events narrated. If it has been a while since you've read Autobiography of a Yogi, this video will definitely make you want to go back and re-read it. Other DVDs you may like:
