What is it?
A 40-minute stretching and flexibility routine for exercisers who are 50 and up. There's also an additional 10-minute introduction to Pilates and a 10-minute introduction to Yoga. Robyn Stuhr instructs most of the segments and 50-something model Cindy Joseph hosts (Joseph leads the brief Yoga segment).
Who is it for?
Beginning exercisers over 50, although some of these stretches may be difficult for those who are not very flexible. This DVD will probably be too slow for those who are already exercising regularly. Because both instructors are over 50, this routine is pretty age-specific. You will need a chair, a strap and a mat if you are exercising on a hard surface.
What to expect:
As you get older, flexibility training becomes more important than ever. While it's essential to stretch after every workout, over 50s would do well to occasionally devote a full session to flexibility alone. That's what Robyn Stuhr and Cindy Joseph do in this 40-minute routine. With the help of a chair and a strap, they show you stretches for all your muscle groups. It's best to approach this routine gently; some of these exercises may be difficult for those who are very stiff (and that undoubtedly includes this DVD's target audience, which is over-50s who haven't exercised much, if at all, for a long time). Keep in mind that stretching at its best should feel good. At the very least you should be able to breathe away the tension you feel. Stretching should never, ever be painful. If any of these poses prove challenging, it's best to skip them until you gain more flexibility. This is a pleasant enough routine, although rather slow. You also get short introductions to Pilates and Yoga. Again, some of these exercises may be a bit difficult for those who are out of shape, so be kind to yourself and skip anything that is too challenging. This routine is probably best used in conjunction with the other two workouts in the "Keeping Fit in Your 50s" series.
