Yoga Booty Ballet: Goddess Abs & A.M. Latte(Razor Digital) 2007 What is it? A two-DVD Yoga Booty Ballet set. One disc focuses on ab work and the other one concentrates on cardio, light toning, breathwork and meditation. As always, Gillian Marloth and Teigh McDonough instruct. Who is it for? Beginning exercisers. There is a dance and Yoga focus, so if you are dance challenged or not a Yoga fan, you may want to look elsewhere for a workout. The routines are done barefoot. You will need a mat, and the "squishy ball" that's a Yoga Booty Ballet staple, or some "squishy ball" equivalent — a small, squishy (i.e., not hard) ball that you can hold in one hand.
What to expect: I tend to think of the Yoga Booty Ballet series as "exercise lite" — fun, a little New Agey, nice to do on days when I'm really not up for the pure power of Jari Love or even the solid, mid-level workouts of Michelle Dozois or Chris Freytag. But I have to say, the "Goddess Abs" disc wore my abs out! The only downside is that nearly the whole routine uses that confounded "squishy ball" of theirs. I don't have one, but I do have a small, squishy ball from another workout program, so I used that and it seemed to work just fine. This routine gets your whole rectus abdominus, from upper to lower, and your obliques (sides of your waistlines), plus some spine-twists at the end. The "A.M. Latte" is a little over a half hour long, but gives you less than 20 minutes of actual exercise ("Goddess Abs" is 20 minutes long and offers about 13 minutes of exercise). The first 10 minutes or so is part meditation, part Pranayama, or breathing exercise — you spend a few minutes doing the energizing Lion's Breath. The meditation is the usual Yoga Booty Ballet mudra and intention setting ("Goddess Abs" has this too). Then you go into a carefree, 10-minute barefoot dance routine. The next 8 minutes is divided between easy ballet-style moves and basic Yoga poses, done at a slow pace. You end as you began, with meditation and mudra. While this — and the others in the Yoga Booty Ballet series — are fun, especially if you are a New Age, spiritual type, it may be a good idea to supplement them with some more intense workouts, for better muscle tone and fat burning.
