What is it?
A 45-minute beginner's blend of Yoga and Pilates. Jonathan Urla instructs.
Who is it for?
Beginning exercisers — this is an easy program, and you don't need to know a whole lot about either Yoga or Pilates, since none of the moves are all that taxing. You will need a Yoga mat.
What to expect:
If you're looking for a very gentle introduction to exercise that doesn't pander or make you feel foolish, here's a great place to start. Urla takes you through a variety of poses in three 15-minute segments that can be done altogether or separately, as needs be. The first segment is a core strengthener and has the most Pilates in it, although in a highly modified form. The next two are more Yoga-based; the middle segment focusing on back exercises, while standing poses are saved until the final segment, which includes balance practice and easy Sun Salutations. Urla generally shows you easier Yoga poses such as Bridge and Locust, allows you to rest often, and encourages you to go only as far as you feel comfortable in Tree. This is a nice DVD if you are looking to gain flexibility and some core strength without being forced to watch pretzel people. Fitness, after all, is not a competition — it's about working on your own level to be the best you can be. If you're just starting to get into shape, consider allowing this DVD to be your introduction.
