10 Minute Solution: Quick Sculpt Pilates(Anchor Bay) 2009 What is it? Five 10-minute core and lower body-based Pilates workouts, four of which utilize the included inflatable "toning ball." Andrea Leigh Rogers instructs. Who is it for? Intermediate exercisers with Pilates experience. These workouts are fast-paced, and you need to have good form and a core that's already fairly strong to master these moves. You'll also need a mat — the ball is included in the kit. If you're renting the DVD or acquire it sans ball, you'll have to find one that's about 9 inches in diameter, inflatable, and fairly soft and squishy — something like this one.
What to expect: Those of you out there who find a lot of Pilates DVDs too slow or a little too easy will find a fresh new challenge with the five workouts on this 10 Minute Solution DVD. My nickname for it is the "abs killer." Ignore the fact that Rogers runs quickly through these moves with apparent ease; these exercises are tough and require a lot of core control and practice. If you've done a lot of Pilates (and to do this DVD, you should have a good amount of experience), these exercises will all seem familiar, but they take on a whole new life when you've placed a small, squishy ball between, your ankles, your knees, or underneath your rear end. It looks like fun to do the helicopter with your butt balanced on a ball, or the criss-cross while passing the ball through your legs, but it's really a lot of work! For the most part, these exercises target your core and lower body more than they do your upper body, although the standing workout keeps your arms elevated for most of the routine. By the way, even though the standing workout is done without the ball, don't think that Rogers is letting you off easy — most of these exercises involve a balance challenge.
