(Anchor Bay)
2006
What is it?
A half-hour Pilates workout with 3 different levels of intensity — you choose how challenging your want to go. Ellen Barrett instructs.
Who is it for?
Beginning through intermediate exercisers (while the advanced level can be tough, those who are really advanced at Pilates may still not find them challenging enough). You'll just need an exercise mat.
What to expect:
While putting "weight loss" in the title of this exercise DVD was mostly a marketing ploy, this is a nice, half-hour workout that targets the lower body more than the traditional core that is Pilates' usual focus. Instructor Ellen Barrett gives you three levels to choose from, basic, intermediate and advanced (two models behind her show the beginning and advanced modifications). After a quick warm-up, you start with 10 minutes of standing Pilates — leg lifts, leg circles and the like. The next 10-minute segment focuses on lying side exercises and the final 10 minutes is all about mat work. The nice thing about this DVD is you can change levels at any time — maybe you're at a beginning or intermediate level for most of the DVD, but there are a couple of exercises where the advanced version is more appropriate for you. The downside of this DVD is that Barrett spends a lot of time setting up each exercise, and sometimes you only get a couple quick passes at the more advanced versions (this is fine for beginners, but if you're past that point, you may occasionally wind up feeling a bit cheated). This is not an overly tough workout, even at the advanced level, but it's a pleasant routine and you get a pretty good workout for your lighter days.
