(Anchor Bay Entertainment)
2002
What is it?
Three 10-minute Pilates-based workouts targeting your abs, thighs and butt, plus a 10-minute bonus workout for your whole body. Ellen Barrett instructs.
Who is it for?
Advanced beginning exercisers — some knowledge of Pilates is helpful. Intermediate exercisers may find these routines too easy. You'll need a mat.
What to expect:
Depending on how you feel about Pilates, you will either love or hate these quickie workouts. If you are a Pilates purist who believes that the most benefit comes from the exercises the way they were taught by Joseph H. Pilates, then this won't be your cup of tea. Traditional Pilates uses moves in specific sequences to benefit the whole body; in contrast the workouts in this Crunch program are short and highly targeted. In addition, Ellen Barrett sometimes uses Pilates as a jumping board for creating exercises that Joseph H. never had in his repertoire. On the other hand, if you are a beginning or advanced beginning exerciser who wants to target certain body parts, and Pilates is merely one of several methods you are using in your fitness program, you will probably appreciate these routines. Each segment is fast paced (probably out of necessity, since they're all so brief), but Barrett's helpful instruction keeps you on track. The workouts are all pretty easy and you can squeeze in any segment any time you have ten minutes to spare (or you can schedule more time to do two, or all three, plus the bonus routine). These are easy, versatile Pilates workouts that anyone can fit into her day.
