2006
What is it?
An hour-long Pilates-based session targeted for men, plus a bonus, 15-minute power-Pilates blast. Lindsey Jackson instructs.
Who is it for?
While this routine is geared towards men, it's great for anyone, from beginners on up. You will need a mat.
What to expect:While Pilates has been enthusiastically adopted by women who want a long, lean physique, the exercise style was originally developed by a man, Joseph Pilates and practiced by other men. Later on, Pilates was embraced by the dance community as an excellent rehabilitative tool and only decades after that did the general public discover it. Slowly, Pilates has been gaining favor among athletes, both professionals and weekend warriors. Its balanced approach to strength and flexibility, along with its focus on the core muscles, make every movement, both sports-oriented and functional, easier and smoother to execute: throwing a ball, your golf swing, even picking up a grandkid. The routine on this DVD makes a great introduction for the everyday guy who wants to improve the quality of his life physically. According to instructor Lindsey Jackson, it may even enhance your sex life!

The routine starts off with a 9-minute warm up, and then Jackson takes you through a routine that works your whole body in one fashion or another. While the exercises are about 80 % Pilates, there are also some Yoga poses added, which only add to the workout. Pilates relies on the precision in which the exercises are performed, and Jackson is excellent at giving cues that will have you doing each move correctly. There are two men following her instructions on screen, one doing more of a beginner's version of each exercise, and one doing a slightly more advanced version. The only real drawback of this DVD is that the main routine is an hour long, so you have to block out some serious time on your schedule to do it. It's worth it, however, and once you know what you are doing, there's a 15-minute power routine for those days in which you only have a few minutes to spare. In addition there's a 7-minute relaxation session, which is nice for de-stressing after a hectic day.
