(Goldhil)
2001
What is it?
A 45-minute Pilates routine for advanced beginners through intermediates.
Who is it for?
Those who know their way around the basic Pilates moves, have gained a bit of proficiency, and who want a workout that's not too easy.
What to expect:
Moira Stott-Merrithew's detailed approach in her Essential Matwork tape is really too slow for anyone but beginners. Intermediate Matwork, on the other hand, takes those basic exercises, builds on them, and runs through them a lot more quickly — it's far more like an actual Pilates class. With her attention to detail — she constantly reminds you about form, positioning and breathing — Stott-Merrithew is as good an instructor as you can get without having someone correcting your moves in person. Some of the exercises here are truly challenging — the Rollover, for example, really takes quite a bit of strength and control — and those who cheated and bought this video before becoming familiar with Essential Matwork or another good, beginning Pilates tape will not be able to keep up. You do need to know what you're doing because Stott-Merrithew doesn't wait for you to catch on. Intermediate Matwork is an excellent video for those who have become bored with the beginners' tapes and are ready to move onto the next step. It will definitely help build core strength and flexibility and is a nice supplemental practice for those who take classes on a regular basis.
