(Sony)
2006
What is it?
A DVD that contains an almost unlimited variety of toning workouts — you pick how long you want to work out, the intensity and the body parts. Minna Lessig instructs.
Who is it for?
Beginning to intermediate exercisers. You will need 2 to 5 pound dumbbells (maybe 8 pounds if you are on the more advanced side). You will also need a mat if you are working on a hard surface.
What to expect:
Occasionally you'll come across an exercise DVD that allows you to customize your workouts. But this is the first one to mix it up on a really broad scale. There are over 115 exercises on this DVD, each approximately 1 minute, or one set, in length. Depending on how much time you have, you can schedule in a few minutes, a half hour — even a killer 72 minute workout! You always start with a few minutes of warming up (there are 3 warm ups, and the selection is random). Then you program your workout. You have a choice of upper body, lower body, abs, or full body. You also pick the length and intensity (level 1 is easier and level 2 is more difficult). You end by clicking on the randomly selected cool down and if you have the time you can also take advantage of the 7-minute stretch. The intensity is further honed by the weight you choose. If you are a beginner you will probably want to start off light. If you are more advanced, you'll go heavier. Minna Lessig is the perfect instructor for this program. Her cueing is excellent — she's good about explaining form and frequently reminds you to be aware of the muscle worked, and to breathe. That said, it's helpful if you already have some experience working with dumbbells — the sets are very fast-paced so you should already be comfortable with correct form. While there is a pause between each exercise, the workouts aren't all that choppy — you'll probably welcome these very brief moments to catch your breath. The sheer variety of workouts will keep your muscles guessing and keep your mind from getting bored. In fact, if you could only afford one exercise DVD, this one should be it. Very highly recommended!
