What is it?
Five 10-minute workouts, two of them cardio dance, one a combination of dance and toning, and two toning segments. Jennifer Galardi instructs.
Who is it for?
Advanced beginning exercisers who enjoy dancing and choreography. The workouts are quick, so even when they get intense, it's only for a short while. The toning segments use an exercise band (included), and aren't too tough.
What to expect:
If you love dance DVDs and do them often, you'll begin to notice that some instructors are easy to follow while others make you feel like a klutz. Often this doesn't have so much to do with teaching techniques as it does with the moves themselves: everyone's body is different and moves in its own way, hence some steps may not seem natural to you. As a result, I have mixed feelings about Jennifer Galardi's workouts. Her steps don't work intuitively for me and she'll set up a series of zigging moves while my body keeps insisting on zagging. This is especially frustrating because she makes her workouts look like so much fun... and easy! Take this DVD — the first 10-minute routine (which is usually the easiest segment of the 10 Minute Solution DVDs) took me days to get down. I was ready to fling the disc across the room. But finally, when I learned the steps, it was a blast! So the only place the DVD got flung was back into the DVD player for the rest of the workouts. Dance workout #2 is a very fast-paced, retro-60s style routine with twists and ponies and a lot of sweat. The steps were, thankfully, not quite as complex as the first segment. The third segment uses snaky belly dance moves for a light ab workout (that I could do; I've taken belly dance for years). The final two segments are decent toning routines using the exercise band — you'll get the kind of workout you might want when you just don't have the energy to heft a couple of good-sized dumbbells. One focuses on upper body and the other works your lower body. How much you enjoy this DVD will depend on 1) if your body moves like Galardi's naturally, or 2) if you're willing to hang in there and get the steps down (Galardi's encouraging, it's just that with only 10 minutes, she doesn't have a lot of time for pep talk). If you do stick it out, you will have a good time — and get in a workout.
