2004
What is it?
Four 10-minute targeted strength training sessions, plus a 10-minute "power stretch" routine. Cindy Whitmarsh is the instructor.
Who is it for?
Beginning exercisers — this DVD is a good, user-friendly way to start working out. You will need a mat and one or more pairs of dumbbells (3, 5, 8 or 10 pounds, depending on your level). Having one lighter and one heavier set is a good idea because chances are you have some muscles that can handle more (or less) than others. Intermediate exercisers may find these workouts too easy — or they may want to do them with heavier weights when they are pressed for time.
What to expect:
Too many beginning exercisers think that all they really need is light cardio and voila, they've got a fitness program. While cardio is essential, and there's nothing wrong with a brisk 20 to 30 minute walk every day, to really get — and stay — in shape, you need more. Strength training is essential if you want to look good. It's the only thing that'll give you attractive shape and definition. It'll also keep your strength up — keep picking up dumbbells and you'll never have to weaken as you reach middle age and beyond. And those muscles keep your metabolism from slowing down too, so you're less likely to put on weight as the years go by. Many of you are probably saying, "Yeah, yeah, I know all this!" — but have you acted on that knowledge? If not, and if the idea of weight training is not terribly appealing to you in spite of its many benefits, then you really should give this DVD a try. It offers up your strength training sessions in easy, 10-minute segments. Each routine focuses on a different body part: legs, upper body, glutes and abs, plus there's a really nice stretch routine to keep those newly trained muscles supple and flexible. Instructor Cindy Whitmarsh is a friendly cheerleader who often encourages you to squeeze in just one more set of reps, and she has a creative approach to traditional strength moves that will help keep boredom at bay. If you feel like doing just one segment, fine, but if you want more, you can program in several routines — or you can do all of them. This DVD eliminates just about all the excuses you've been using to get out of strength training. It's quick, easy to do and you might even wind up liking it!
