(Lionsgate)
2008
What is it?
Five 12-minute workouts, ranging from cardio to strength training to stretch, programmed to mix and match or do singly. Denise Austin instructs.
Who is it for?
Advanced beginning through intermediate exercisers (intermediates may want to program several of the segments together as a "lighter" day). You will need 3 to 5 lb. dumbbells and a mat.
What to expect:
Don't let Austin's peppy demeanor fool you: she really gives you a workout. And even though you're time is limited with this series of five routines, she manages to make her mark. You supposedly get 12 moves in each 12-minute workout here, but honestly, I didn't count them. What's important anyway is whether they do what they're supposed to. You get two different cardio routines: "Cardio Athletic" includes some light plyometric (i.e., jumping) moves, while "Cardio Kickbox" adds punches and kicks. Both do a pretty good job of leaving you breathless. "Lower Body Sculpt" and "Upper Body Sculpt" both include some ab work. The lower body segment works you a little harder than the upper body (I was tempted to add more flyes, shoulder and tricep work at the end of the latter). The "Yoga Stretch" routine is really more stretch than Yoga, but that's okay — it still enhances your flexibility and lengthens your muscles. These routines are programmable — you can do as many as you want in any order you want, or you can follow Austin's daily recommendations. The good thing about this DVD is that if you have 12 minutes, you can squeeze in a routine; if you have some quality time for working out, you can add more segments. The not-so-good part is Austin's below-average cueing. That's not such a problem with this DVD, however, because the moves are simple. If Austin's cueing has bothered you in the past, it won't be as big an issue here. And I've got to hand it to her — anyone who can look this good at 50-plus (she's currently 52) — has something to teach about fitness!
