What is it?
A 45-minute circuit-training workout from Denise Austin. Requires a step bench and a pair of 3 to 8-pound dumbbells.
Who is it for?
Intermediate exercisers who are in pretty good shape. The cardio segments include some plyometric moves, so those with knee problems should stay away.
What to expect:
Denise Austin dials down the perkiness a bit and revs up the workout in this aptly-named video. It alternates three and a half minute, intense cardio segments with one and a half minutes of toning (done seven times over) to provide a great interval workout. This tape isn't dancey — the steps are athletic and range from kickboxing to basketball moves, nice for those who are intimidated by heavily choreographed workouts. That doesn't mean, however, that the cardio segments are easy — Austin goes through them pretty fast and adds plyometric power. The weight segments are almost a relief. Although the box recommends 3 pound weights, most people at the level of fitness required for this tape will probably want to go with heavier dumbbells. The workout, in fact, begins with push-ups, and anyone who can do several push-ups in a row definitely needs something heavier than a 3-pound dumbbell. There's some ab work at the end of the tape, but not much — you may want to throw in a few extra crunches (if you have the energy left over) to really make this a full-body workout. All in all, this is one of Austin's better, more challenging videos.
