(Warner Home Video)
2004
What is it?
Two 50-minute strength training workouts — one full-body and one for the lower body — plus two 20-minute abdominal routines. Your instructor is Jake Steinfeld, of Body by Jake fame. (This is a DVD release of three of Jake's VHS workouts.)
Who is it for?
Advanced beginning through intermediate exercisers. While these routines are basic, they are fairly intense and people who haven't exercised before will find them a struggle. You will need at least one set of dumbbells, preferably more than one set (weight depends on your ability), a stick or a dowel for the ab warm-ups and a mat.
What to expect:
It seems like every few years, there's a new movement in the fitness industry to add spice or something fresh to exercise. But the truth is that the basic routines worked back in the day, and they still do. Take these three Body by Jake routines. They originally came out in 1994 and they all offer traditional moves like lunges, squats and crunches, solid instruction, and they use time-honored variety and pacing to keep your muscles guessing and your heart rate up. The full-body and lower-body workouts are performed in 3 "circuits" — you can do one or all of them, depending on your schedule and endurance. There are two abdominal circuits. You will need to be pretty fit to make it through all the circuits of each routine — if you are still closer to beginner level, you will mostly likely poop out after one or two. Jake is a real pro, but he's also pretty funny — it's like being coached by your slightly nutty uncle from Long Island (if your uncle happens to be a respected fitness expert). You don't just work your glutes and abdominals, for example — you work your "buttisimo" and "abba dabbas." In addition, the outfits and music are dated (after all, these workouts are from 1994). But if you want an effective workout routine without a lot of fancy stuff, these quirks shouldn't bother you. This is non-trendy, classic exercise that gets results.
