(Anchor Bay)
2004
What is it?
A 54-minute workout that blends light weight training, Pilates and stretching. The first 20 minutes are standing exercises, and the next half hour is done on the mat. Your instructors are Michelle Dozois and Tracy York.
Who is it for?
Beginning exercisers will find this workout challenging, but doable as long as they have some familiarity with weights and Pilates. More advanced exercisers will find this DVD useful on days when they want a solid workout that's not too tough. You will need 3 to 5-pound dumbbells and a mat.
What to expect:
In just under an hour, Breakthru: Pilates Sculpt gives you a little bit of everything you need for a day's workout: strength training, flexibility and you even get your heart rate up a bit. Michelle Dozois and Tracy York have put together a variety of compound exercises and Pilates and weight training moves that thoroughly work your whole body from shoulders to legs. After a 9-minute warm-up, the pair lead you into standing exercises for both your legs and upper body, and then take you down to the mat for exercises that combine traditional weight training moves with Pilates. In spite of the fact that "Pilates" is in the title of this DVD, don't expect the usual moves you see in other Pilates DVDs. This is more of a Pilates-influenced workout that engages your core throughout most of the exercises. When there is a Pilates exercise, it's generally performed in a new way — for example, Dozois and York give you a version of the Hundred that takes ab work to a whole new level. Although you are using light weights, don't think this is a wimpy workout, either — your muscles will likely ache the next day after your first couple of passes through this DVD. If you're looking for muscle tone without bulk, and you want to hit your whole body in under an hour, this is a great DVD to add to your collection.
