What is it?
A 50-minute, callisthenic-style toning workout, divided into 10-minute targeted chunks. There is also a 5-minute bonus "ab ripper." Cindy Whitmarsh instructs.
Who is it for?
Beginning through intermediate exercisers. It's not as tough as some of the other "bootcamp" style workouts out there. That said, it's not something you breeze through, either. Other than athletic shoes and a mat, you won't need any equipment for these classic exercises.
What to expect:
This is a good, basic workout DVD that doesn't use weights, so it's great for someone who's starting out and hasn't invested in dumbbells yet. There are five different segments and you can do one, two or all five, depending on your time, energy level and whim. The first segment is mainly an active warm-up, which leads you to 10 minutes worth of athletic-style cardio (there's no real choreography, which will come as relief to those who hate learning steps). The lower body routine relies on good, old fashioned squats, lunges and curtsey lunges to hit every angle of your body. The upper body segment has you doing push-ups, side-lying triceps push-ups and back extensions. Ending is a surprisingly challenging ab routine and stretching segment. Then, if you haven't already worn out your abs, you can also do the "ab ripper," which is 5 minutes' worth of plank variations. While these exercises are fine for most levels of fitness, there is a modifier showing easier versions for beginners. You have the option of choosing one routine at a time, or doing them all, but one caution: on my copy, the full workout skipped over the leg routine and I had to add it in at the end. So if you get this DVD and the full workout only runs 40 minutes, yes, you did miss something. In any case, if you choose to do just one or two segments, make sure you warm up for a few minutes beforehand and stretch out the muscles you used when you're done.
