What is it?
A basic, instructional workout session that focuses on strength training and geared for women in their 50s and beyond. The instructor is Robyn Stuhr with an assist from 50-something model Cindy Joseph, who hosts the program.
Who is it for?
New exercisers who are over 50. If you are over 50 and already strength train, this DVD will be too basic. It will probably also be too easy and slowly-paced for beginners in their 30s, unless they are really out of shape. This workout is pretty age specific. You will need one or two sets of weights, appropriate to your capabilities, a chair and some exercise bands or exercise tubing. You will also need a mat for the floor exercises if you are working out on a hard surface, and some sort of step or big, sturdy book (hardcover, not phone book!) for a couple sets of calf exercises.
What to expect:
If you spent the first four decades of your life not doing much exercising, then you'd better get busy! Strength training in particular will help prevent osteoporosis, keep your metabolism up, help keep you functionally fit and give you an overall sense of wellbeing. And 50-plus is not too late to start. Robyn Stuhr makes it easy for you to strength train with the careful instruction in this hour-long exercise session. You work your whole body — legs, rear end, shoulders, back, chest, arms and abs — with this series of simple exercises. Most of them are done with light hand weights (you can switch to a heavier pair when you feel you are ready), and some are done with the aid of a chair or exercise bands. Accompanying Stuhr is model Cindy Joseph, who didn't even begin her modeling career until she was 49. You will learn how to strength train in a way that is appropriate for your age group. If you're already weight training, however, you probably won't need this DVD. And if you're younger, even if you're not in shape, this workout will probably be a little too soft for you — give it to your mom. This is definitely geared toward the 50-plus age group. The one real downside to this DVD is that while it gives you a warm-up, there is no stretching session when you are done. That's a big no-no for 50-somethings. When you reach that age, stretching isn't optional, it's essential. So when you are done, make sure you spend at least 10-15 minutes gently stretching all the muscles you used during the session.
