(Razor Digital)
2006
What is it?
An hour-long workout that includes compound moves to strengthen and tone your whole body, while developing your core muscles at the same time. Jari Love instructs.
Who is it for?
Intermediate through advanced exercisers. You will need a mat and one or more pairs of dumbbells, between 3 and 10 pounds (more if you're a guy... and if you're a man, don't be put you off by the female instructor. This workout will work quite well for you, too). A barbell is optional. You will also need a step bench to get the most out of some of the exercises, but it's not absolutely necessary, especially if you're not very advanced.
What to expect:
Get Ripped to the Core contains a mere 9 exercises in the course of an hour's workout. That doesn't sound like much, but by the time you are done, every muscle group in your body will be screaming for a rest. Jari Love has designed a series of compound moves that often work multiple sets of muscles, always engage your core and other stabilizers, and she sets up the reps so those muscles are fully fatigued. You get combos like Stiff-Legged Deadlifts with Rows and Step Ups with Overhead Presses, so you really work. Like her original Get Ripped workout, this is a straightforward routine, meant to get serious results for both men and women. Easier and more advanced modifications are shown, along with the weight load carried by Jari and each of the other 3 exercisers. If you're starting out with Love's routines, however, it's best to ignore how much weight they're using — if you need to go down to 3 pound dumbbells for some of the exercises, go right ahead, and don't consider yourself a wimp. Keep this DVD in your regular exercise rotation and you will be able to graduate to heavier weights. This "Body Pump" style workout will burn maximum calories while building muscle, which makes this routine extra effective. For fun, check out the "bloopers" section of the bonus features, by the way — Love has a serious demeanor throughout the workout, so it's amusing to see her lighter side.

Ripped to the Core
written by M LaVelle, March 06, 2008
This is a strength video which uses compound exercises. The exercises are mostly high repetition with low to medium weights used. The high number of repetitions increase heart rate to take a user into the cardio zone. This video doubles the benefit by increasing muscle strength and cardio stamina. It is an excellent video to add as another option for exercise. I have used The Firm and Cathe Friedrich. This falls somewhere in the middle range of intensity for those programs. It can be harder if weight poundages are increased. Excellent workout for serious exerciser.
