What is it?
A tough, half-hour blend of cardio exercise and resistance training that focuses on your back, biceps, buttocks and hamstrings. Jillian Michaels, one of the trainers from the TV show The Biggest Loser, is your drill sergeant... or rather, instructor.
Who is it for?
Intermediate to advanced exercisers. You already need to be in pretty good shape for this workout. There are modifications shown, but the intensity is still pretty high. You will need 2 to 5 pound dumbbells, a step bench and an exercise mat. You will also need some room to move, as you will be working around the step from every angle.
What to expect:
Are you ready to work? Do like getting pushed around by a tough instructor who won't take no for an answer? Then this challenging routine may be just what you're looking for. This workout is just under a half-hour long, but Jillian Michaels wrings every last second out of it, and wrings every last bit of sweat from your body. The moves are athletic, boot-camp style, as is Michaels' attitude. You'd better be up for jumping jacks, jumping lunges, reverse planks with leg lifts and lots more. Michaels believes that combining cardio and strength training is both time efficient and effective. She's right, but this workout isn't for everyone. It's tougher than her Shape Up – Back workout, which is pretty intense to begin with. Even the modifications don't tone things down all that much. You already need to be in good condition and working out regularly if you intend to get all the way through this DVD. And it also helps to be a glutton for punishment, as Michaels has a demanding, somewhat abrasive attitude. But maybe you need that kind of push to get you to the next level. If you find other exercise DVDs lacking and you're begging for something to really challenge you, then Maximize – Back in Action will target the back of your body in ways that will probably make you hurt (in a good way) the next day.
