(Natural Journeys)

What is it?
A 54-minute workout that combines aerobics with toning in a unique, multi-plane approach. Kathy Smith instructs.
Who is it for?
Intermediate exercisers. You will need a set or two of light weights (2 to 5 pounds — lighter than what you would normally use) and a mat.
What to expect:
How would you like to get a toned physique while improving functional fitness — and burn some calories while you're at it? This workout does it all in a little less than an hour. Kathy Smith uses a circuit training style, apparently borrowed from a fitness instructor she found while vacationing in Idaho, and who you can see among the exercisers in the workout. The basic premise is that you view the floor like a clock face, and move around it accordingly, hitting all levels and areas of your body. There are a lot quick, twisting moves so you will want to use lighter weights than normal — otherwise you risk wrenching your back. And even if you do all the exercises properly, some of your back muscles and your intercostals (rib muscles) will probably be sore the day after the first few times you do this DVD — that's because you don't get to work them in most other types of workouts. For the first half hour, you'll do a quick-paced standing routine that will work up a sweat, and even with the lighter weights, give you some muscle fatigue. The next 10 minutes consists of floor toning, and Smith finishes up with the requisite cool-down and stretch. While this isn't the most sweat-inducing aerobic routine you'll find, or the most powerful series of toning moves, you get a good combination of both in a fairly brief period of time, and the workout is fun. Just be careful to use a lighter weight, for safety's sake. In fact, you may want to use none the first time out just to see how the routine flows, and to get used to the moves. Combined with other exercise routines, this workout can kick your fitness program up a notch, or help you move past a plateau.
