Kickbox: Core Cross Train(Gaiam) 2008 What is it? A 73-minute kickbox-style workout in four parts that focuses on both cardio and building strength from the core on out. There's also a 14-minute "bonus" stretch and core strengthening routine. Patricia Moreno instructs. Who is it for? Intermediate through advanced exercisers who don't usually kickbox — it looks simple enough, but it's quite intense! If you are an experienced kickboxer, however, this may be too basic for you. You'll need next to nothing by way of equipment, just your athletic shoes and maybe a mat for the bonus segment.
What to expect: I confess, I'm not a fan of kickboxing workouts. I don't get a charge out of punching and kicking; I'm just not that kind of tough, hardass fitness buff. Call me a "smiley-face exerciser" if you want and I'll just take it on the chin. But I thought this DVD would be nice since it didn't sound too difficult and I could basically phone in the review when I was done. Wow. I didn't know what hit me 'til the next day when I was sore all over (but it was a good soreness!). Patricia Moreno certainly offered up a clearly instructed, basic kickbox routine, but she did it in a way that kicked my butt and then some. There are four segments to this workout; the first one combines a warm up with punching for 15 minutes, the second is 25 minutes of aggressive cardio, part three is 18 minutes of kicking drills, and for the last 15 minutes, Moreno puts together some combos and cools you down. (The only downside is that the segments are separate — you can't combine them into one long routine, so you're stuck returning to the main menu for the next section.) You work from the core out — Moreno initiates each move from the center while offering up powerful, affirmative encouragement. By the end of these routines I was dripping in sweat. Since I am a glutton for punishment, I also tacked on the bonus routine, which kept me in increasingly tough variations of plank pose (regular, side, one-legged, you name it) for 14 minutes — great for your core and upper body strength. No wonder I was sore. But I was sore and happy. And if you get this exercise DVD, you will be too. Other Exercise DVDs you may like:
