(Anchor Bay)
2006
What is it?
A 43-minute circuit-style workout that includes 4 segments of toning exercises for all the major muscle groups alternated with brief bursts of cardio. Veteran fitness pro Michelle Dozois instructs.
Who is it for?
Beginning through intermediate exercisers - the whole point of this DVD is that you can "pick your level" of intensity. That said, it still helps to be familiar with dumbbells and basic strength training exercises. You will need 3 to 10-pound dumbbells (two different-sized pairs would be great) and mat.
What to expect:
While many exercise DVDs feature a token "modifier" who illustrates easier versions of the workout, they are usually shunted somewhere near the back where they can't readily be seen. So the concept for this workout series (which also includes Pick Your Level: Weight Loss Pilates) has been long overdue. It's put together so that you really do get 3 levels of exercises in one workout session, and you can pick and choose which level of each move is right for you. These aren't slapped-together modifications, either. Each version of these creative exercises is well thought out — you never feel like you're being cheated because you can't do the full version, or that more advanced exercisers are being shortchanged. Everyone gets to work up a sweat! You can also vary your routine, mixing some of the more challenging versions with the easier moves, depending on what your body needs on any particular day. Much of the success of this DVD is due to two things: 1) the smart editing and 2) the expert instruction of Michelle Dozois. If you were exercising back in the days when workouts were only available on VHS, you probably exercised at home with her then, and she's only gotten better as the years have gone by. Dozois' upbeat enthusiasm sees you through a variety of strength training moves alternated with short cardio bursts that keep your heart rate up. The combination works all your major muscle groups and your core, and the added cardio helps you burn more calories that a normal strength training workout. All around, this is an excellent DVD and highly recommended.
