What is it?
A 53-minute, metabolism-boosting, interval-style workout that alternates toning segments with cardio. Tracey Staehle instructs.
Who is it for?
Intermediate through advanced exercisers — this is absolutely more difficult than it looks! You will need two sets of weights (probably 3 to 5 pounds, maybe a little heavier if you are advanced), a sturdy chair and a mat.
What to expect:
When I'm trying out any sort of weight training DVD for the first time, I generally use 3 to 5 pound dumbbells — in other words light (for me) weights, so I can get used to the moves before going heavier. So I was very surprised to discover that a couple of "lighter weight" exercises on this DVD were killing me with mere 3-pound dumbbells! Staehle knows how to create a compound move that's so effective, the last few reps hurt. The toning segments combine upper and lower body moves, so that while you're squatting or lunging, you're also working your back, shoulders or arms. These are alternated with athletic-style cardio segments to rev up your heart rate. The last toning segment works your chest muscles. Staehle does no targeted ab work — if you are doing these moves correctly, you work your core throughout the routine. Each segment has a "Level One" and "Level Two" — if you can't tough it all the way through the Level Two version, you can always drop back to Level One to get a second wind. The ending stretch is a little brief, and I didn't feel I had enough leg stretches or hit all my upper body muscles, so I did a little more after the DVD was finished. One thing you might consider: although Staele recommends two sets of weights, if you have more, keep them handy - you may want to drop a pound or two halfway through your reps! This effective, efficiently-arranged workout really keeps you working.
