(Natural Journeys)
2005
What is it?
Four short graceful, non-traditional abdominal workouts. The DVD includes 2 additional "bonus" routines. Leisa Hart instructs.
Who is it for?
Beginners and up. The moves require a bit of coordination but they are not all that hard. You will need a scarf, a mat and an armless chair or stool.
What to expect:
If you can't think of anything more boring than crunches, and you find most exercise routines a tad on the macho side, then you may be interested in the graceful, feminine approach to abdominal workouts in this set of routines. The first segment is 8 minutes' worth of gentle "sculpting" while seated in a chair or on a stool and moving gracefully with a scarf. The next two segments — the 10-minute "Hour Glass Shaping" and 8-minute "Belly Flattening" — are floorwork. Instructor Leisa Hart and the other exercisers use cute little, 1960s-style flower-power mats, and some of the moves are Pilates-based. The final segment, "Back Strengthening," is 8 minutes of gentle back exercises that you perform while draped over the chair or stool. The DVD includes 2 additional 5-minute segments — "Waistline Trimming," which targets your obliques and "Core Stretch," which is a nice finishing touch to any of the previous workouts. Hart keeps you flowing through each routine, so it may take two or three tries to get the moves down smoothly. While these routines won't get you six-pack abs, they are a nice way to ease into an exercise routine for your abs and core. If you really want to get your abs tight, however, you'll just have to suck it up and learn how to do proper crunches, or at the very least invest in excellent Pilates workouts, like Rael Isacowitz's DVD series.
