(Gaiam)
2009
What is it?
A 40-minute cardio routine, plus two different 12-minute toning workouts, all of which focus on your butt, hips and thighs. Lisa Wheeler instructs. There is also a bonus, 12-minute "total body blast" taught by Tracy York.
Who is it for?
Advanced beginning through intermediate exercisers — but keep in mind that you'll need to love learning choreography. You will need a mat for one toning segment, and 3 to 5 lb. weights for the bonus workout.
What to expect:
Although Lisa Wheeler choreographs easy-to-learn workouts for others (note some of Denise Austin's better DVDs), when she does her own routines, she tends to pull out the stops — and the steps. Case in point: the cardio segment of this DVD. Wheeler throws out a variety of complicated moves quickly, taking only a minimal amount of repetitions to build on the base. Once you master the steps, the routines are a lot of fun, and they do include a lot of powerful lower-body moves. But it may take you a few passes to learn this workout, and the odd camera angles don't help (Lesson One of exercise DVD camerawork should be: the more complicated the choreography, the more simple you shoot it). The toning workouts are creative and you won't need any weights: the first is a ballet-inspired series of exercises that will strengthen your legs and give you a nice butt lift and the second is based on Pilates matwork, with a few unusual twists. Also included is a "bonus" total-body routine with Tracy York — it's the same bonus routine that's already on other Shape DVDs, so even though it's good, it's not really that much of a bonus. Bottom line: this will definitely tone your bottom and if you hate weights and love dance, you'll enjoy it.
