(Rodale)
2008
What is it?
A mix-and-match exercise DVD from the South Beach people, consisting of a 20-minute interval cardio workout and 3 15-minute strength-training routines. Lisa Christie instructs.
Who is it for?
Beginning and advanced beginning exercisers. Not for the extremely out-of-shape or seniors. You'll need one or two pairs of 3 to 5 pound dumbbells and a mat. One strength-training segment uses an optional step for advanced moves.
What to expect:
Diet alone doesn't get you the body you want, which is why the South Beach Diet organization has put out this DVD. It has the two exercise elements that help you burn calories — cardio, which does it while you're in action, and strength training, which builds muscle that burns more calories longterm than fat does. You can alternate cardio and strength training days for quick workouts that'll fit into just about anyone's schedule, or you can combine workouts for a longer routine. The cardio segment consists of interval training and it's not as easy as some beginners' workouts. You do some jumping and lunging, but you do get ample recovery time between the harder intervals. Don't be afraid of the 30 or 45 second bursts of intensity — unless your knees or back are bad, you will benefit a lot from this type of cardio approach. The strength training is done barefoot and each 15-minute segment is progressively more difficult. The focus is on the core outwards, so there is a bit of a Pilates feel to the exercises. The second segment uses a step for the more advanced version of the legwork, and you will get the most out of these moves if you have one. There is nothing fancy about these exercises — they are solid, basic and fine for beginners. If you work up to the point where you are able to do the cardio segment and all 3 strength-training routines in one session, then you probably need a more challenging DVD.
