(Wgbh Boston)
2004
What is it?
An hour-long beginner's Yoga routine, especially geared towards seniors, which can be divided into 3 approximately 20-minute segments.
Who is it for?
Mainly seniors, but also anyone who is out of shape and is concerned that even a beginning Yoga routine may be too challenging. Cappy tones it down for you. You will need a Yoga mat and a sturdy chair.
What to expect:
If you're out of shape or aren't very flexible, of if you're over 60, don't let that keep you from enjoying the benefits of Yoga. You actually need Yoga more than a healthy, active 20-something individual. Yoga enhances your ability to function by getting the kinks out of your body and making your joints more supple. Peggy Cappy gives you a modified, more basic alternative to a traditional beginner's Yoga class and it's perfect for seniors and others who are very out of shape. This DVD offers an hour-long workout that is broken up into three segments — you can do all the segments or just one or two, depending on your schedule and desire. The first segment has you doing a variety of stretches while sitting down, to limber up. These stretches would be great to do every day, and they would even be nice for anyone who spends a lot of time sitting in front of a computer. In the second segment, Cappy leads you through standing poses, and you have the option of using the chair if you are flexibility challenged. The last segment starts off with Sun Salutations (again with the chair, if you need it), then you go to the mat for some more simple stretches and end with relaxation. If you are already familiar with Yoga, or if you are in pretty good shape, you probably won't be challenged enough. This DVD is definitely for older and out-of-shape people who haven't been exposed to Yoga before. If that describes you, then this routine is the perfect place for you to start.
