What is it?
Three 20-minute Yoga sessions based on the doshas of Ayurveda.
Who is it for?
Advanced beginning exercisers and Yoga enthusiasts. These workouts are quite different from other Yoga workouts, but you will find many familiar poses. You will need a mat.
What to expect:
It's surprising that no one has thought to combine Ayurveda with a Yoga workout on DVD until now; both disciplines have their origins in India. This series of three workouts is brought to you by Lissa Coffey, author of What's Your Dosha, Baby? and Yoga instructor Hemalayaa, who you might remember from the Yoga for Urban Living DVD. The two of them have created the workouts based on the doshas — certain mind/ body principles that, according to Ayurveda, define our physical and mental traits. There are 3 doshas, each one with its own set of defining characteristics. Generally, Vata individuals are thin and move quickly; Pittas have medium builds and tend to be temperamental, while Kaphas are more heavyset and easy-going. Although all individuals are a combination of the 3, one dosha tends to predominate. Each of the 3 Yoga sessions is meant to help ease imbalances in a specific dosha. Vata is structured for warmth and calming; Pitta is for focus and cooling; Kapha's routine is invigorating. If you are used to the traditional Hatha-style Yoga taught in most studios and the majority of DVDs, you will find some aspects of Dosha Yoga familiar, but others will be new to you. Along with Yoga poses you already know, you'll find Mudras (hand gestures meant to influence focus and awareness), Mantras and a number of Indian dance moves. So approach these Yoga routines with an open mind. In addition to the workouts, there is also an informative section with Coffey on how to live an Ayurvedic lifestyle. This Yoga DVD has something different and quite interesting to offer.
