Element: AM & PM Yoga for Beginners(Anchor Bay) 2008 What is it? Two Yoga routines, a 36-minute morning one and a 27-minute evening workout. Elena Brower instructs. Who is it for? Yoga beginners and up. It's well-taught and the routines are appropriate for levels up through intermediate. You will need a Yoga mat — props aren't needed for the modifications.
What to expect: While I liked the routines on this DVD from the start, I didn't really appreciate them until I tossed on another quick Yoga workout because I still had leftover exercise time. The instructor for that DVD was one of those personal trainers who sometimes does a bit of Yoga here and there — and there was a huge difference. If you want instruction that both creates a mood and is easy to grasp, if breathing cues are important to you, if you believe Yoga is as much about your frame of mind as it is a physical pose, then always, always go with a full-time Yoga instructor. Well meaning as they might be, instructors who primarily think of the gym as their home just can't give you an authentic Yoga workout. Elena Brower teaches Anusara Yoga — just a touch different from basic Hatha-style Yoga — and her instruction is as beautiful as it is clear. Brower is never esoteric — she keeps you right inside the routine, doing the poses to the best of your ability. The AM workout, as you might imagine, consists mainly of flowing Sun Salutations and standing poses; the PM routine is more relaxing and stretches you out. Even though poses like Downward Facing Dog, Dandasana and Forward Bend are familiar old friends to anyone who has practiced Yoga, Brower manages to keep things fresh and brings you into a place of discovery. While neither of these workouts is very long, they're refreshing in a way that many other gym-type Yoga workouts aren't. Highly recommended. Other Exercise DVDs you may like: >
