Every Day Yoga for Every Body(Yoga For the Young At Heart) 2005 What is it? A 48-minute, intermediate-level Yoga routine geared towards Baby Boomers from Susan Winter Ward. Who is it for? Yes, it's a Boomer workout, but the poses are not wimped-out. This one's for middle-aged people who have been practicing Yoga for a while and who already have a bit of flexibility. (Ward has other routines that are geared more towards beginners.) You will need a mat.
What to expect: Nobody talks about one of the most frustrating aspects of aging — the annoying assumption that you can no longer be fit or flexible and that exercise routines must be dumbed way down for your creaky, old body. The truth is that fitness is the same, no matter your age — if you are new to it, your body will need time to adjust, but once it does, your level of ability will progress. This is something Susan Winter Ward understands completely. Just because she has salt-and-pepper hair, it doesn't mean she takes it easy. She takes her class of over-50 Yoga enthusiasts and offers up a routine loaded with twists and hip openers (yes, we're talking about Pigeon, among others), and the gently backbending approach that her style of Yoga is known for. While Ward goes over the poses a little more slowly than you might find in a practice for under-30s, she invites you to explore each move as much (or as little) as you are able. There are modifications, but you really do need some flexibility, strength and Yoga experience before giving this workout a spin (that would be true, no matter your age). This routine is a nice progression from Ward's other DVDs. So if you're past that first flush of youth (and the second... and perhaps the third), don't buy into the myth that your body has nowhere to go but down. Yoga routines like this one will go a long way to keep you fit — or even help you become better than ever. Other Exercise DVDs you may like:
