What is it?
A flowing Yoga workout, just over an hour long, that includes some graceful, dance-like moves. Micheline Berry instructs.
Who is it for?
Advanced beginning Yoga enthusiasts — while it's called "beginner's flow," that doesn't mean it's for total Yoga newbies. You should be familiar with the basic Yoga postures and comfortable with the workout's Eastern bent. You will just need a sticky mat — there are no props needed, and no modifications shown.
What to expect:
This flow routine is just a little different from your usual Yoga workout, so if you've gotten into the bad habit of tossing the DVD into your player and doing the routine right away (like me) instead of watching it once all the way through, you may want to change that. You will notice right away that Berry's spine is something very snakelike and fluid, and while you may never achieve that type of undulating flexibility, that is where this workout invites you to go. It is divided into different chapters, starting with your basic cat-cow type pose and then adding a circular movement. From there it goes into several different Vinyasa flows, each of them adding some sort of circular or spiral movement, whether that means moving your arms or torso. The last part of the routine focuses on releasing your spine and shoulders, and flowing backbends and twists. As a physical exercise, Yoga's main purpose is really to give health and longevity to your spine (the flexibility you gain should be an extra-added bonus). This routine really focuses on that, while also enhancing the mobility of your limbs. Berry's instruction emphasizes breath (very important) while assuming that you are familiar with the poses, so this isn't a workout for total Yoga newbies. If you are looking to add flow to your Yoga repertoire, however, this would be a really nice place to start. I should mention that if you do start here, many other flow routines may pale in comparison. Liquid Asana One is that kind of special.
