What is it?
A 50-minute Jivamukti Yoga session featuring David Life, Sharon Gannon and singer/ songwriter Michael Franti.
Who is it for?
Intermediate to advanced yoga enthusiasts — the practice is moderately fast-paced and there are several advanced poses featured. Those who enjoy the spiritual side that Jivamukti Yoga highlights will get the most out of this DVD. And hippies. You will need a mat and one or two blankets. No other props are shown, but if you have some and know how to use them, you may want them nearby for the more advanced poses.
What to expect:
How you feel about this DVD depends on how you view your path to fitness. If Yoga is just another part of your regimen, sandwiched between trips to the gym for your treadmill runs and sessions with your trainer, then this probably isn't the DVD for you. But if you consider Yoga part of a lifestyle that includes spiritual health, if you've found that the more you practice Yoga, the less you're inclined to eat meat and blow up in rush hour traffic, and the more you'd like to see everyone in the world just get along, then Spearhead's Michael Franti and his teachers, David Life and Sharon Gannon may be just what you're looking for. They open up with a bit of chanting and pranayama and then they ease you into poses while ruminating on a world where peace is most powerful and kindness to the earth is a priority. If the 1960s is your favorite decade, then you'll think this is the next best thing to the Summer of Love. But you'd better be pretty deep into your Yoga practice, because there are some challenging balance poses to be had, along with headstands, shoulderstands and backbends. If you're an edgy, Type A personality, all this focus on peace and love may be a little disconcerting. I'm somewhere in between — Type A, to be sure, but I also want to save the world; not quite advanced enough for some of the poses, and definitely not peaceful enough for the serenity these people seem to offer. I felt a little silly, but I suppose that's what I get for being a punk rock, '80s kinda gal.
