What is it?
A 24-minute Yoga workout that focuses on the lower body and core, plus a 13-minute "Foundation Vinyasa" bonus routine. Shiva Rea instructs.
Who is it for?
Intermediate Yoga enthusiasts. You need to be comfortable enough with your Yoga practice to explore beyond the usual asanas. You will need a mat.
What to expect:
It always takes me a few tries to get used to Shiva Rea's routines because her approach is more creative and free-flowing than what I'm used to. Take this routine, for example — I was uncomfortable with it at first. The first 13 minute section is called "Creative Roots" and consists of flowing movements involving Yogic squats, Side Angle, Reverse Warrior, and some unique, freeform variations that I couldn't quite get into. The next 9 minutes is "Creative Core," which includes several different types of Bridge, a Plank and Side Plank sequence, and a vinyasa she calls "Rocking Bridge." The last couple of minutes are an all-too brief Shavasana. But once I got used to the routine, I started to enjoy it and appreciate the graceful, almost dance-like flow. Once I was able to release myself into the practice, it was fun, especially the Rocking Bridge move. The Creative Roots sequence keeps your lower body engaged throughout — you will feel it the next day. The core sequence is just what it says: core, as opposed to just abs, so expect all your stabilizers and back to be worked. The bonus sequence is nice, too — it's a flow routine that will make your spine feel snakey and supple. It's from Rea's Fluid Power DVD, and makes a nice warm-up for the main workout. If you find Shiva Rea's workouts a little strange at first, keep at them — chances are your body will finally "get it" at some point, even if your mind takes a little longer to catch up.
