(Yoga for the Young at Heart)
1999–2005
What is it?
About 40 minutes of Yoga stretches that can be done sitting in a chair. Susan Winter Ward instructs.
Who is it for?
Beginning Yoga enthusiasts. That said, it helps to be fairly flexible already for many of these stretches. Those who are very stiff or who have health issues may actually find parts of this sitting workout too tough! It's ideal for deskbound souls who want to undo the damage done to the body by sitting all day. You will need a sturdy chair, and for one stretch, a strap.
What to expect:
Is it possible to really enhance your flexibility and sense of wellbeing while never leaving your chair? If you follow along with Susan Winter Ward on this DVD, you'll do exactly that. Ward starts you off with a breathing exercise and then, body part by body part, leads you through stretches that begin with your head, neck and shoulders and end (all too briefly) with your feet. Included is a segment for arms and wrists — great for anyone who is worried about getting carpal tunnel syndrome. Ward finishes up with a quick visualization-style meditation. Each segment is only a few minutes' long, so if you're feeling stiff in any one area, you can go to the section that features that body part for a quick stretch. (Unfortunately, the DVD isn't segmented very well, and when you try to skip ahead, you're never sure where you're landing. The best way to find what you're looking for is to fast-forward.) Included are some forward bends and hip-openers that may be difficult for those who aren't very flexible or who have limited mobility, so keep that in mind. But for most people, these series of stretches will be satisfying, even if you don't have Ward's range. While Susan Winter Ward's yoga routines are generally geared towards baby boomers and seniors, anyone who has a desk job would do well to have a copy of this DVD by their computer to use during their breaks.
